How to Simplify Spring Cleaning
and 5-Page Printable Checklist
It’s that time! Springtime – which means not only getting outside for some fresh air fun, but finally opening windows, decluttering and cleaning!
Spring cleaning isn’t always the most fun thing, but here are some tips and a FREE 5-page printable checklist to help you go through your house, room by room!
START WITH A PLAN
Spring cleaning can feel overwhelming before you even start if you don’t have a plan. Formulating a plan of attack can help decrease overwhelm and stress.
Grab a notebook to jot down an overview of what you want to accomplish, and who is going to help in the process. At my house we delegate jobs to each family member who’s old enough to help!
Another option is to (spoiler alert) use a room-by-room checklist to guide in your Spring cleaning!
Here’s a FREE 5-page printable checklist to help you!
It includes one page for each area of your home:
- Bedrooms
- Bathrooms
- Kitchen & Dining Area
- Living Room
- Extra Areas
DECLUTTER FIRST
As you make your way through each area of your home, first things first—declutter any misplaced items and throw away any trash. Even if you need to throw some things into a “sort it/file it later” bin that is ok. At the least do what you can to clear flat surfaces so you can dust and wipe them down.
A great way to start is to separate items as you go through them is to put 3 large boxes or laundry boxes in the room, and label them “Sell/Donate”, “Toss” and “Keep.” The “Keep” items you can deal with later but make a plan to get rid of the “Sell/Donate” and “Toss” items so they don’t stick around too long.
Decluttering will help you feel so much better and the actual cleaning process will go much quicker!
THE PROPER PRODUCTS
It is very easy to make some of your own cleaning products if you wish to clean chemical free or if you happen to be out of a certain cleaner. Many natural cleaning products use some of the same ingredients. Generally, you need water, castile soap or distilled vinegar, and essential oils (optional). You can clean a lot of things with those basic ingredients. Pinterest is full of “homemade cleaning product” recipes.
UPBEAT MUSIC & SOUNDS
This is a great time to listen to those old 80s albums you haven’t played in a while, or a favorite podcast. When I clean that’s what I listen to – but any energizing or inspiring listening will help keep you moving and make the job go by faster!
SET A TIMER
If you’re the type of person that can dive into a project and forget to come up for air, then you might want to set a timer. A timer can help you stay on task, zip through a room and get much more accomplished in just 15-30 minute than you expected. It’s always nice to hone in on a task, and then once that timer goes off you know you’ve got the freedom to move on.
For me, working on a project for one hour at a time works best! Then I move on to the next project or at least take a break.
FINISH ONE ROOM AT A TIME
Most moms are masters at multi-tasking, which has its pros/cons. When we’re multi-tasking our house cleaning can feel like nothing gets accomplished very well. It helps to work through the house one room at a time. Clarity and confidence come when you’re able to check one room off your list! You conquer that one room and you’ll be ready to move on to the next…and then the next! You’ve got this!!
