It’s pretty cool being in 4th grade, because you can get a couple of different freebies just for being a 4th grader! One is national but the other one is just for those in Minnesota.
Actually, both of these programs were created to help kids be more active, have fun and stay healthy, and 4th grade was chosen because 9-11 year olds are beginning to learn about the world around them, so it’s an ideal age for both.
1. Minnesota Ski Areas Association 4th Grade Passport Program
The Minnesota Ski Areas Association offers a 4th Grade Passport Program so kids and their families have a chance to play on MNSlopes all winter long for FREE (note one-time fee below). The goal is for families to enjoy winter, have fun and stay healthy together.
Every 4th grader has the opportunity to ski for free. All Minnesota Ski Areas are participating. There is a cost of $34.95 to cover printing and shipping, and then your 4th grader receives a special pass and a minimum of two free lift tickets at every Minnesota member area. Just allow 2 weeks for them to be mailed to you.
Some of the ski areas participating include Wild Mountain, Giants Ridge, Elm Creek, Spirit Mountain, Afton Alps and many more.

2. Every Kid in a Park
Every Kid in a Park was created so fourth graders and their families could discover our country’s wildlife, resources, and history for free.
It was first announced by President Obama in early 2015 because American children spend less time outdoors than ever before, and this program wanted to address that problem.
Since the launch of Every Kid in a Park, hundreds of thousands of young people have had the chance to experience America’s parks and historic sites, many for the first time.
And in case you’re wondering (like I was) – fourth graders were chosen “because research shows that kids ages nine to 11 are beginning to learn about the world around them. They’re open to new ideas, and they are likely to connect to nature and our history.”
The program provides fourth grade students and their families free admission to all national parks and other federal lands. There are 5 in Minnesota. Learn more and sign up here: https://www.everykidinapark.gov/.
