THE BIG EPIC SHOW
I’m excited to introduce you to Miss Cherice Mahal, owner and creator of THE BIG EPIC SHOW!
THE BIG EPIC SHOW is a comedy and hip-hop variety show for children, based right here in the Twin Cities. They are a team of 5 performers, led by Miss Cherice Mahal who are best known for their live comical performances and music, which are “epic” in nature.
I met Cherice a few years ago at one of her local performances. My kids and I loved her show, and we have seen her perform at places like the Minnesota Parent Kid Fest and even the Mall of America. She even joined us for trick-or-treating in our neighborhood one year! She has amazing energy, and brings out such joy and creativity in the kids. Everything she does is positive and uplifting, and she is such a natural with kids and teens of all ages.
She recently released a CD of all original music for kids, and is soon launching a new show, so I wanted to interview her and share her story with local families here. I’m so glad to have her as a friend, and I hope to encourage families to attend one of her shows and even book a birthday party with her!
Story of THE BIG EPIC SHOW
How did THE BIG EPIC SHOW begin?
I was in a show choir in high school. A friend of mine, Brian, was also in this show choir – he went on to create Koo Koo Kangaroo, which many local families know.
I then attended the University of Minnesota and was in a gospel choir. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Child Psychology and Family Social Science. Then after graduation I had a corporate career for 2 years, but that didn’t work out. So I resigned and began working as a nanny. I spent a lot of time with kids, and then one day I ran into a friend from high school who invited me to karaoke. I tried it out – I was so nervous! But there was a spark and I started going 4 days a week! Eventually I won a karaoke talent contest, rapping like Salt & Pepper. The prize was $500!
I then started a hip-hop girl group called “Blonde Insanity” with a friend from high school. This then led to more fun opportunities like DJing, and I took a job as a band manager for an adult group where I learned a lot of skills including social media. These skills and experiences led to creating my own show, THE BIG EPIC SHOW!
The start of THE BIG EPIC SHOW
THE BIG EPIC SHOW’s first performance was at a venue in downtown Minneapolis. Soon after I performed a kids version of the show at the Children’s Hospital in Minnesota. It was like Saturday Night Live for kids, which we did 4 times with games like “Name That Song.” This experience made it clear that my niche was kids!
From that point on we performed for big names like Minnesota Parent, the Mall of America, and PBS, plus museums, parks and libraries.
In 2017 we released the show’s first original kids album, which you can get on our website. We’re also touring across the Midwest and nationally.
What do you want families and kids to know about THE BIG EPIC SHOW?
Our message is being proud of who you are! We bring kids up on stage where they feel like stars. Our show is inspirational and comical. We want to share music and laughter with as many children as possible.
