This winter for some reason was a particularly long one for me. Spring had come and I was ready for a road trip – even a mini-one! Since it was my grandma’s 94th birthday in April, we decided to head up to Duluth to visit her and celebrate. And while we were up there, we decided to get a little taste of the tropics and stay at The Edge Waterpark and Hotel. We needed a weekend escape!
The Edge is located on London Road, between Canal Park and the North Shore. It’s right at the end of Interstate 35 (where it then becomes Highway 61), and has a great view of Lake Superior.
When I was in high school, I actually worked here cleaning hotel rooms. It was just called the Edgewater Hotel and wasn’t yet a waterpark, but it was a great hotel for families. Ever since it became a waterpark I had wanted to visit with my kids, and this visit seemed ideal.
Everything in the hotel is tiki-themed, from the lobby to the gift shop to the hotel rooms themselves. (And yes, these are clowns in the picture – there were some clowns visiting this weekend from the Shrine Circus, which we did go to see!)
The lobby had some fun train tables for the kids, and a great view of the waterpark, which we could see was popular as it was busy the whole time we were there.
We had a spacious, two-bedroom suite with a balcony facing Lake Superior. There were two queen beds and one king bed, and great amenities including two TVs, a microwave, a fridge, two sinks, and Bath & Body Works toiletries. My kids loved the room, including the elephant made from hand towels!
The view was great, day and night.
The hotel has a fitness center, a gift shop, a coffee shop, concierge, a complimentary shuttle, and many more amenities and services. We didn’t have time to use them all but I wish we had.
We spent a couple hours in the waterpark. My kids enjoyed the Vortex pool, Paradise Playground (with the big bucket that fills up and splashes down on you every few minutes), and just splashing around in the water with the many things to play with and climb. They had plenty of towels, life jackets and everything else you could need. There’s even Tiki Tom’s Oasis and Grill to get a bite to eat, including pizza and ice cream. They also had games (rubber ducky races!).
Despite all the fun we had at the Waterpark, I think my kids loved the arcade best. The room came with some free arcade dollars to redeem for tokens in the arcade, but my kids could have played for hours, especially after all the tickets they kept winning!
Breakfast was onsite at Tiki Tom’s Big Breakfast Buffet. You couldn’t beat the price – $6.99 for adults, and only $.99 for kids ages 4 – 12 (kids 3 and under are free!). There was plenty to pick from including chocolate chip pancakes, french toast sticks, cinnamon rolls, sausages, potatoes, oatmeal and scrambled eggs (made with sour cream, which actually was pretty good). There were cold options, too, including cereal and fruit. The place was nothing fancy, but we filled our tummies pretty well here.
What was included with our room?
We received waterpark passes for every day we were there (they’re a different color each day), two buy-one-get-one tokens for beverages in the Lava Java coffee shop or Sunrise Lounge, arcade dollars, and other discounts for the Duluth area.
What else do you need to know?
There were some outdoor amenities that are of course, seasonal, such as a miniature golf course, outdoor pool and hot tub. There’s definitely enough here to keep you busy! And it’s right along the lakewalk, which you can follow a few miles in both directions – toward Canal Park, and toward the North Shore.
There are also plenty of businesses nearby within walking distance, including a Perkins restaurant (right next door), a Dunn Bros coffee shop, gas stations, and several fast food restaurants.
