Nadia Cakes Cupcake Shop & Custom Cake Studio is a fun, new place to get yummy treats with your family in the Twin Cities area. Here’s my family’s review of this amazing cupcake shop!
Where is Nadia Cakes?
They just opened up a new shop in Maple Grove (on Fountain Drive near Costco) in July, and it’s been popular! Originally started in California by Abby Jimenez, a busy mom of three, her cupcake shop gained fame on TLC’s show “Fabulous Cakes” and as a winner of the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.” If you didn’t see those shows (I missed them as I don’t have cable!), you can see pictures of her unbelievable cakes on her website. (Seriously…check it out. You’ll be amazed!)
What’s the story?
Nadia Cakes has a neat story behind the shop. As Abby was preparing for her third child, she came up with the fun idea of learning how to decorate her kids’ birthday cakes. She started taking a class, started making cakes for family and friends, had her baby, then realized making cakes would be a good way to make a little money. She started her business, named it “Nadia Cakes” after her middle child Nadia’s nickname, and the orders started pouring in. For a couple of years life was crazy for Abby, with raising 3 kids now and trying to keep her growing business going (moms know how tough it is balancing work with being a mom!). But she pulled through it well and finally opened a shop that became so successful, her husband quit his job to work with her.
After first hearing about Nadia Cakes from a co-worker a couple weeks ago, I took my family there one night last week as part of a fun outing. It was a nice, inviting, and attractively designed shop with friendly staff, cute tables and seats, and cupcakes of about a dozen different flavors, ready to eat. It was a busy place, with a bright, coffee shop feel (and a variety of other desserts and beverages including coffee to choose from). Read on for our review of Nadia Cakes!
Prices for cupcakes are:
- Cupcake $2.95 each or 4 for $11.50, 6 for $16.50 or 12 for $30
- Filled Cupcake $3.25
- Cheesecake Cupcake $3.25
- Mini Cupcake $1.75
What makes Nadia Cakes so much fun?
What’s so fun about going into Nadia Cakes is that every day there is a different variety of cupcakes offered…about a dozen a day out of 133+ varieties!
I picked up a list of all 133 flavors and wow, listen to these fun flavors: “Caffeinated Zebra,” “Candy Corn,” “French Toast and Bacon,” “Kitty Litter” (I have to find out what that is), “Spotted Dalmation,” “Sunk’n Drunk’n Irishmen,” “Peanut Butter and Jelly” and “Worms and Dirt”. Of course, there were irrisistable flavors as well, including “Almond Amaretto”, “Andes Mint Brownie Cupcake,” “Dulce de Leche,” “Red Velvet,” “Trible Chocolate,” “Twix Caramel” and MANY more… Check out their full menu and daily choices on their website. (They also have some gluten-free and sugar-free options.)
Of course, they do many cakes and other treats as well. If you’re interested, you can view their gallery of unique options for birthday parties, weddings and other special occasions.
What we got from Nadia Cakes (and our review!)
We got 4 cupcakes for $11.50: two “Vanilla Vanilla,” a “Brownie” cupcake and a “Chocolate Vanilla” cupcake. The kids loved theirs (wearing some of their cupcakes as well). My husband and I enjoyed ours, and we all shared with each other. We had milk with ours (couldn’t imagine cupcakes without milk!).
Afterward, we took the kids to the nearby Elm Creek Park Reserve to burn off their treats. (I recommend going there to let your kids burn off energy. We burned off some of the cupcake calories, too, just chasing them around!)
Even frugal families deserve a special treat once in a while, so if you’re ever in the Maple Grove area, make Nadia Cakes a special outing for your family!
Note: Nadia Cakes did not compensate us for our review of their store.
