Egg Bake or Cheese Strato Recipe
I LOVE egg bakes and here’s one recipe that’s worked well for me. Others have complimented me on it as well.
8-10 slices of sandwich bread (I use whole wheat so you need less – you may need more if you use white bread)
3-1/2 cups milk
3/4 cup sharp cheese, grated/shredded
2 Tablespoons minced onions
1 10-oz package chopped broccoli
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups diced ham
1/4 tsp. dry/ground mustard
6 slightly beaten eggs
tomatoes (optional)
Cut bread with donut hole center, set aside (I cut holes with a can or jar). Place the edges of the bread in a GREASED 13 x 9 inch pan. Sprinkle half of the cheese on the bread. Add layer of broccoli and layer of ham. Arrange the rest of the bread (the circles) on top. Combine remaining ingredients (including some diced tomatoes if you wish) and pour over all. Refrigerate overnight (so the flavors blend). Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Sprinkle remaining shredded cheese over strato and bake last 10 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes for easier cutting. Serves 6.
